Clear Creek Reservoir
Summer camping! It's the best. It's better with friends. We took our extra kid and headed up to meet some friends at a lake, Clear Creek Reservoir Colorado State Wildlife Area. What do you do camping at a lake with friends? You...
Sleep in a tent (steal Momma's warm spot... whatever)
Go down to the creek (fish, explore, fall in.... whatever)
Catch up (talk, laugh, talk some more.... whatever)
Talk to a peer (mention her hair, her height, covet her braces... whatever)
Go on a hike (be king of the world, fall on your butt... whatever).
Find fascinating things to climb (lick, fall off of... whatever)
Take your first ride in a canoe! (fishing, catching minnows in cups, losing the oars in the water... whatever)
Learn how to cast a line (get it snagged on the rocks, on your pants, a tree... whatever)
Practice reading (390, 300-900... whatever)
Get tuckered out (read the map, snore, play 3DS... whatever)
Make new friends (priceless)

Around the Garden
Victory Ranch
Victory Ranch, a for-donations horse ranch in Cedaredge, CO provides therapeutic horse riding for children who are either hurting from life trauma or have special needs. Today, Rhetta had her first lesson with Victory, the horse for whom the ranch is named.
They spent a large portion of the hour getting to know each other: Kell
yi and Rhetta, Rhetta and Victory, Victory and Rhetta. We weren't yet sure if it was going to be too much for Sis to handle at first.
Kelly talked to her at length about Victory and horses in general. Rhetta repeated a lot of what she was learning but didn't ask many questions. She did however display some prior knowledge of horses and readily shared that with Kelly.
Not quite ready to touch a horse.
"Hmmm... maybe I'll try petting him."
They listened to the sounds of horses around the ranch. Rhetta had stated she never heard a horse whinny in real life before. Shortly after that she heard her first nicker and SMILED! Yup, happy girl. Then Victory whinnied and took her by surprise. Next she learned what a nuzzle is. Victory nuzzled her a couple of times, in fact. That seemed to secure the bond a little. Rhetta got less and less shy until she agreed to groom him some.
My beautiful girl. ♥ But that's not all!
Kelly felt Rhetta was just brave enough to [show her how to] saddle up Victory and go for her first ride.
It was only in some tight circles near the barn, Kelly led her around, but it was enough. She was shaking a little bit up there, probably a little too much input for one hour and she made sure to comment on the uneven ground, but I was so proud of her!!
Victory Ranch is Kelly's baby and we want it to succeed. If anyone is willing to donate to her cause please contact her directly. Money, clean horse hay, volunteers, etc. accepted:

Relief! and the Delta Bubble
The heatwave broke, yes, but it's still summer and it's still kinda HOT. So, we went up mountain.
We don't have a cabin, nor do we have ATVs or fishing gear or anything fancy like that. But we do enjoy the mountains in our quiet, serene sort of way. We could see it was raining, so we went up to dance in the rain.
July, you say? Ha ha ha! July in the Colorado mountains*, you mean! (*AKA: raining and 52°F)
What is the Delta Bubble, you ask? Well, at our house it doesn't rain very often. In fact, some years it rains across the river from us - 1/2 mile away - and has left us bone dry. Delta on the whole gets less rain than the entire rest of the county. They call it the Delta Bubble. The storms form over the Uncompahgre, move ENE like they are supposed to, then split off before reaching town. One system will move over to Grand Mesa (aptly nicknamed Thunder Mountain) and the other will move off ESE over Olathe and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park completely bypassing Delta. We get to see some great rainbows but are somehow denied any actual moisture.
So, on the way down today we saw this most amazing scene. The perfect illustration of the Delta Bubble. See the sunny spot?

Colorado Rocky Mountain Ski-ies
Get it? It's a play on the John Denver song. Funny, right? Oh well, ANYway...
It rained! Ten long months without any precipitation in my town, but the heatwave broke and the skies opened up and what a show it was. Too bad I wasn't home to dance in it. Here are some shots from the county line however.
Looking up Kannah Creek.
Sunset over the Colorado Monument.
Most awesome sky full of clouds.
This bank of white clouds that look like mountains were what was left of the storm over Delta.
